The
40th anniversary of Doctor Who's first broadcast, on the
23rd of November 1963, was celebrated in style by UK Gold over
the weekend of the 22nd and 23rd of November 2003. The satellite/cable
channel aired an entire weekend of special programmes, including
repeats of stories and old documentaries as well as newly commissioned
features.
UK Gold has been showing Doctor Who continuously since the channel began broadcasting in 1992 (see Radio Times article Classics from Outer Space). It could be argued that UK Gold (which is part owned by the BBC) has, over the last decade, probably introduced more people to the programme than BBC TV whose support, until recently, has tended to be patchy and inconsistent! That, of course, is something that is doubtless set to change considerably as a result of the announcement of a new series in 2005.
Gold had announced the Doctor Who @ 40 weekend earlier in 2003 but full details remained sketchy right up to the time of broadcast. The 'blurb' on their website gave some clues as to what was to be shown:
Doctor Who @40 Weekend
UK Gold will be offering up its own very special tribute to Doctor
Who's forty fantastical years of teatime travel. The channel's
unmissable Doctor Who @ 40 weekend will be packed with brilliant
programming, including the documentaries Adventures In
Space and Time and Carnival Of Monsters ;
seven complete Doctor Who stories voted for by
thousands of UK Gold viewers; exclusive shorts featuring interviews
with cast members and famous fans, and behind the scenes footage.
Saturday 22nd & Sunday 23rd November.
In the week before the weekend listings magazines covering the 22nd and 23rd offered slightly more detail but viewers still had to wait until the weekend itself to finally see exactly what was on, see below for a full listing of what was eventually shown.
In the final analysis UK Gold offered the public a weekend of excellent programming that comprised stories from each TV Doctor (apart from Paul McGann) and documentaries including specially commissioned features and shorts, produced by independent TV production company Free @ Last and this was where the Cuttings Archive was involved...
For us the most notable aspect of the Free @ Last produced programmes lay in the unique, for broadcast TV coverage of Doctor Who, use of press and Radio Times coverage of stories and events.
The Cuttings Archive was contacted by the Executive Producer, Barry Ryan, a few weeks before the final air date and asked to help source high-resolution scans of Newspaper and Radio Times articles and listings (we also helped to source some rare video footage for the documentaries).
Whilst much of the material broadcast was taken straight from cuttings already on the website a number of listings were scanned specially, these were as follows:
Additionally a number of newspaper articles were scanned for a feature on the mid 1980's cancellation crisis/hiatus. The most notable of these were:
The other materials used on broadcast are far too numerous to list here but there are two galleries of screen captures illustrating the cuttings as used on screen, the first can be seen here. Additionally a full listing of, including links to, all the cuttings used is here.
The weekend provided a superb anniversary present for all fans of the programme and was, we felt, considerably enhanced by the inclusion of the Radio Times listings and the other material from The Cuttings Archive.
See the links on the top left and right of this page for more images and screen shots from the UK Gold programmes, links to the original cuttings used and the original Free @ Last Press Release.
