Introduction

To the best of my knowledge there is nowhere else on the internet that has a full chronological listing of all BBC radio and television broadcasts of Doctor Who, including repeats and major spin-offs/documentaries.

For that matter there is a real lack of comprehensive information about broadcasts in the printed media as well, certainly in anything currently in print. Basic episode guides are ten a penny, but there's little more about broadcast Who on BBC tv and radio than the basic listing of original transmissions.

The only publication we are aware of that has comprehensively listed Doctor Who broadcasts is The Doctor Who Production Guide: Volume Two. Published in 1997 and written by David Brunt, Andrew Pixley and Keith A. Armstrong it included a very detailed section on all UK broadcasts up to 1997 on television and radio, including statellite, cable and digital channels Superchannel, BSB and UK Gold. unfortunately the book was published in very limited numbers by the refereance department of the Doctor Who Appreciation Society and is now out of print and very difficult to find.

When it comes to more readily available mass produced publications even the 1997 book, Doctor Who The Book of Lists, fails to have a fully comprehensive list included! One of the fullest listings that I know of was published in the DWB Compendium in 1993. It covers all original and repeat broadcasts of TV stories, but nothing else, up to 1993. For those interested in facts, figures and statistics it does print ratings and chart positions as well which is interesting. The book can sometimes still be picked up at remaindered booksellers and doubtless there are second hand copies around too.

Apart from that another useful, and highly readable, source of information is to be found in The Handbook series of books, which I highly recommend. These were published by Virgin in the 1990's and written by the excellent team of David Howe, Stephen James Walker and, in the case of some, Mark Stammers.

The handbooks also include ratings and other, exhaustive statistics as well as a large amount of other, very well researched, information. At the time of writing the series is out of print but a new and revised collected edition will be published in March 2005 by Telos Publishing. Copies of the old editions are also often available from specialist dealers, second hand book shops and in online auctions.

It might also be worthwhile getting hold of a copy of another invaluable resource from Howe and Walker, The Television Companion, originally published by BBC books the book was re-published with much additional information, as an unauthorised edition, in late 2003, again by Telos Publishing. This edition is still in print

Having said this, all of these sources cut off at their publishing date, for obvious reasons, and do not cover programmes such as documentaries. The advantage of publishing this information here, on the web, is that there is no cut-off-date for the information contained in these pages so what you read here can be as up-to-date as possible, or at least as up-to-date as the last time it was updated!

Dalek 2

To this end these pages seek to extend the above mentioned print coverage and provide an easy and up-to-date reference to BBC Doctor Who broadcasts. They gather together a comprehensive listing of Doctor Who on the BBC from 1963 to the present.

In addition each page offers links to all the relevant Radio Times cuttings that are currently available here. This should, therefore be an invaluable and unique resource for anyone interested in all BBC broadcasts of Doctor Who, and related programmes, and the coverage that the Radio Times gave it.

You can, of course, view all the Radio Times articles via the pages in the Radio Times section, and don't forget that there are also extensive articles listed on those pages, but the advantage of this section is that it gives a full overview of all BBC Doctor Who broadcasts to date on TV and Radio.

This page serves as an introduction to the listings and contains a few comments below about the way the list itself has been put together and how best to use and read it. This section also includes a history of Doctor Who on BBC television, radio and latterly online (BBC website), covering all the channels that have shown episodes of Doctor Who over the years; namely BBCtv, BBC1, BBC2, BBC Choice (now BBC3), The Light Programme (radio) and Radios 2, 4, 5 & 7.

Please also refer to the Copyright notice at the bottom of each page in this section.

Please note:

The full listing page is rather large so those with slower browsers and/or shorter patience might like to view the list in it's separate, smaller, parts - See the links above left on this page. (The History Page is also pretty large too but it's well worth the wait!)
