Answers:

What does this site cover?

The Doctor Who Cuttings Archive is intended to cover Doctor Who in the non-specialist printed media. Essentially any article, advert, cartoon or other mention of the programme in newspapers, magazines and listings magazines is relevant to the remit of this site.

In addition, and with some provisos, many other cuttings from the printed media are covered too, these include items such as free promotional giveaways and some comic book items.

How is this site organised?

The site is organised into sections that cover the programme in different parts of the media. For example; the backbone of the site is the Radio Times section which deals solely with coverage of the programme in the BBC's own listings magazine.

In addition to this the other main section brings together cuttings from Newspapers and Magazines. There are, of course, many other sections and pages dealing with other cuttings such as adverts and comics.

If you have any further questions about this please refer to the descriptions contained in the Site Map.

How do I best navigate around this site?

There are a number of means of navigation, all designed to suit the different needs of our visitors.

At the top of every main page you will see a Quick Links list, this includes links to the Home/Main page, the Site Map, these Help pages, a Contact Us page, an external link to our Mailing List, a thank you page for Contributors, and a list of our past Awards.

The Site Map page is of particular interest because it lists all the main pages on the site as well as all the 'local' pages, for example; if you go to the top-left of this page you will see a list of the other pages in this section, these are the 'local' pages.

A quick route to any main page on the site is via the "Site Menu" pull-down on the left of each page. By using this you can jump to any main page quickly from any page on the site.

You will also notice that links 'local' to the section you are in are listed above the "Site Menu" - for example; if you go to the top-left of this page you will see a list of the other pages in this section.

In addition we provide an 'ad-hoc' list of related pages and links on the right of each page. Some listings are longer than others depending on the nature of the page but these provide a useful means of surfing across subjects and suggested related pages.

Lastly, and for many most importantly, this site includes a search facility at the top-right of every main and 'local' page. This is a useful way of finding information and pages that cover certain subjects, e.g. Daleks, Yeti, Troughton, Pertwee, 1965, 1971, 1974... etc.

Where do I look for an article?

Articles are placed in the area of the site that best suits them. If an article is from the Radio Times it will be listed on the relevant page in this section of the site. Please see the links on each page to see what each section deals with. Once on a page you will find that the cuttings are organised chronologically, either by decade or year. Each year will have it's own sub-page which contains a list of all articles available to view from that year.

There is also a search facility on the site so you can try typing in a word or phrase that best describes what you are looking for.

If I can't find an article, listing or other item where is it?

If there's no listing for the article then it's probably not on the site yet.

Please be aware that there are semi-regular updates to the site so if something is not here now it doesn't mean that it won't appear at some point in the future.

I've found a link to an article or listing but it doesn't work!

If you have such a problem it can be caused by two things, human or server errors!

In the latter instance try your "Refresh" (Internet Explorer) or "Reload" (Mozilla/Netscape) button a couple of times. If this doesn't work it could be a temporary server problem, in this case try again later. The other cause could be a missing page or broken link caused by human error.

If you suspect that such a mistake has been made please contact us, describing the problem that you are having and we will investigate it as soon as possible.

Also see the comments directly below.

I've loaded up a page but the image that I want to see isn't appearing!

As with the above problem this can be caused by server problems or by human errors. Please refer to the advice directly above.

Why does the quality of the scans vary?

The scans on this site are originated from various sources. Many have scanned by us but others have been donated by fans from around the world. In the latter case we have little control over the quality of either the source material or the scans themselves.

Most scans that are sent in are very good indeed but some do vary in quality and size. We appreciate the tremendous efforts that everyone who has donated to this site has made and would not like to put anyone off donating items so please continue to donate scans. At the same time we would like to make it clear that whilst we make every effort to make each scan as readable as possible there is little that can be done with some of the source material available.

Another issues is that many scans that were placed on this site early in it's life are far inferior in quality than later scans. This is due to a number of factors but mainly due to our now knowing a lot more about creating the best possible scans than was the case back in 1998.

The tools used for image processing have also improved; originally low quality free image editing software was utilised whereas now professional standard software such as Adobe Photoshop and Macromedia Fireworks. This has allowed the creation of a far better quality end product, as can be witnessed by taking a look at more recent updates.

The last factor that has a bearing on this issue is the quality of the image files themselves. For those with some technical knowledge; the scanned images on this site are almost exclusively JPEGS (.jpg) as opposed to Gifs (.gif). The advantage is that the size of the file can be controlled when it is saved, the drawback here is that the greater the compression the smaller the filesize but the quality of the image is worse the more images are compressed.

Back in the early days of this site the scanned images were checked on what is now considered to be a very low resolution monitor (this meant that the poor quality of many early scans was not noticed). The emphasis was also put on creating files that were small and quick to download (remember that internet connections were far slower in the mid to late 1990's) - often image quality was compromised as a result.

More recently our policy has changed and the emphasis is now very much on the quality of the scans. The downside of this is that these larger files take longer to download on dial-up internet connections. However, this, we feel, is well worth it and the quality of the resultant images should speak for themselves!

How can I help?

For one thing please contact us with your comments about the site - often feedback makes all the hard work worthwhile.

On a more practical level keep your eyes open for any articles or mentions of the programme in the press.

If you see anything please contact us and, hopefully, we'll be able to get hold of a copy. If this fails you might, alternatively, like to offer us a scan or a photocopy of the item. If that is the case please see below.

I have some articles and/or other items and would like to offer a copy. What should I do?

If you have any (and we mean any!) cuttings please contact us. This website is intended to offer the most comprehensive archive of Doctor Who in print as is possible so all articles are of interest.

If you don't have a scanner we can work out an alternative method of getting hold of the image. We will, of course reimburse any costs incurred. All those helping in this way will be given a credit on this site for their kind help.

Please be aware that we do have a substantial backlog of scans to work on and so there is always a delay between our receiving scans and their going on the site. This varies but can be a matter of months at times. Please don't be put off by this though. We apologise in advance for this but can assure you that all scans sent in will be placed on this site at some point.

How do I keep up to date with developments on the Doctor Who Cuttings Archive?

The best way to keep up to date with developments is to join the Cuttings Archive Updates list for information about updates and much more, including some exclusives and first looks at some items. There is a link for this service on all main pages and here for convenience. This is a new list so unfortunately all previous members of our old list will have to re-join - we apologise for any inconvenience this may cause.

Alternatively keep your eyes on rec.arts.drwho (RADW) and the other Usenet Doctor Who Newsgroups for notification of updates to this site.

I want to link my website to the Doctor Who Cuttings Archive - do you have any links graphics?

Yes, click here to see some official Cuttings Archive link graphics.

I want a link to my site on this site! How do I get a link?

That's a difficult one! The links on this site are not meant to be comprehensive, they simply detail some of the sites we like and even then there are others we love that aren't listed here.

In general please don't e-mail asking for a link to your site unless you have a completely unique and wonderful site and if that's the case do tell us why!

What are the future plans for this site?

Firstly, to see the site continue to grow and maintain the coverage of events past and present that we have up till now.

We are looking to expand the 1960's and 1970's Newspaper and Magazine pages - these are sorely underrepresented on the site.

Work will continue on scanning every issue of the Radio Times that has Doctor Who coverage. This is a mammoth task but has brought to light some very interesting and obscure articles and facts.

The details of all the articles and listings are being collated and will be presented at a future date as additional pages on this site. These pages should offer the most comprehensive listing of Radio Times coverage of Doctor Who that has ever been available and should be an invaluable and unique resource for researchers and fans all over the world.
