Navigation Problems - Help and Advice

There are a few circumstances in which you may have problems with the menus and links on this site. If this is the case please read the instructions and hints below. You might also like to view the site via the menu on the left or by viewing the Main Pages page. Do also take a look at the bottom of this page for other tips on navigating the site.

Known Issues

This site has been 'road tested' on a PC with various versions of Internet Explorer, Netscape, Mozilla and Opera. It has not, however, been possible to test under every version of these browsers or on Apple Macintosh Computers. There are therefore some limited untested circumstances where you may have problems. if this is the case please notify us.

JavaScript turned off?

There are many ways to navigate the archive (see FAQ for more details) but to use the drop-down menu to the left of every page you'll need to turn JavaScript on.

Older 'broken' browsers

You may find there's the odd navigational glitch in older browsers but that's not the whole story...

The site has deliberately been designed for use with all modern W3C standards compliant browsers - older, sometimes called 'broken', non-compliant browsers would have problems with our standards compliant graphic layout, and many of the visual features we have utilised, so we have used some 'wizardry' to switch such features off in these 'broken' browsers.

This means that in a 'broken' browser, such as Netscape 4.7, we have simply switched all potentially problematic features off - in such a browser you would only see text pages with no formatting but will be able to see all of our important content.

Please note that Netscape 4.7 and other older 'broken' browsers make a terrible mess of web standards and would require non-compliant browser hacks to the site's code to make it work properly. This would make our pages far larger and create a) non-standards compliant pages and b) many more time consuming problems when we upgrade the site in the future and we'd rather spend that time producing more content for the site!

Following on from the above we therefore suggest that you upgrade your browser as soon as possible - please see our special Upgrade page for more details and information on why you should upgrade and sites that can help you out. Alternatively follow the links below to download a FREE browser:

Windows PC's:

Microsoft Internet explorer will be installed (whether you like it or not!) on your machine by default. We recommend that you ditch it and go for an alternative, we recommend Firebird!

  • Mozilla Firebird (our favourite and the simplest to install)
  • Mozilla (standard install)
  • Opera (free but has small banner adverts in browser - small fee payable to switch off)
  • Microsoft Internet Explorer (be aware it's big, it's bloated and can't be removed from a Windows PC's once installed!)
  • Netscape (the latest version is not bad at all, if a little slow, but we're told it's no longer being developed work having been transferred over to Mozilla!)

Linux PC's:

Your distribution will probably have included a browser so if you'd like it stick with it look for an update on the web. We know there are excellent versions of Mozilla Firebird (all distributions) and Mozilla (standard for Red Hat 7.0 or higher) for Linux so if you want to change you could do much worse than going for Moz!

Mac:

As with Linux above you'll have a browser installed with your OS, quite likely to be Internet Explorer (but don't worry - ironically the Mac version is far better than the Windoze one!). Alternatives include:

  • Safari (comes highly recommended by Apple and many users)
  • Mozilla Firebird (to our knowledge only available for OS X)
  • Mozilla (again only available for OS X)

There are more but the browsers above are the main ones.
