11 April :: Press and Listings Update

Leaving aside some some pot boilers in the daily press the UK listings magazines are out today and have the most coverage of Doctor Who. They all include a range of Who related articles and features but, of course, Radio Times takes the prize for it's coverage and another wonderful cover - so get down the newsagents now before they all sell out!

Here are today's details:

UK Newspapers - Tuesday 11 April

  • The Daily Mirror - Doctor Who Week continues in The Mirror with a look back at some of the famous guest stars who have appeared in the Classic Series. It's not the usual selection either - no Martin Clunes or Dot Cotton!
  • The Sun - TV Biz reveals that Billie Piper has a new acting role lined up.
  • The Star - the page three story is based around a nickname that Billie Piper has, apparently, given David Tennant - she calls him 'David Ten-inch' apparantly. The article is full of inneudendo that wouldn't be out of place in a Carry On film and is surely a contender for tenuous news story of the year!

UK Listings Magazines - 15-21 April

  • Radio Times - has a special gatefold Doctor Who cover featured David Tennant, Billie Piper, Elizabeth Sladen and K9, the catnurses, the clockwork robots and a Cyberman. Inside there's a 16-page special (not a pull-out supplement like last year). The listings for Saturday features the (by now) standard publicity pictures and the episode is 'drama of the week'. Other highlights include the winner of the Dalek competition in the Christmas edition and adverts for the Doctor Who Adventures comic and 'Genesis of the Daleks' on DVD.
  • Total TV Guide - features a Doctor Who cover and a two-page article.
  • TV & Satellite Week - also features a Doctor Who cover and an article inside.
  • TV Times - mentions Doctor Who on its cover, and its two-page feature shows how the cat nun make-up was applied.
  • TV Quick - also mentions Doctor Who on the cover and has a feature inside
  • What's On TV - also mentions Doctor Who on its cover, and has a smaller feature inside.

Neither TV Easy or Tv Choice were available earlier - full details of these magazines will appear later.

UK Magazines

  • Heat Magazine - has Doctor Who as its pick of the week with a glowing review and a cover for its TV section.

10 April :: Press Update

Here's the latest from today's press:

UK Newspapers - Monday 10 April

  • The Daily Mirror - has started a Doctor Who week with an interview with Billie Piper, promoted on the front page. A small article next to the interview reveals that Russell T Davies has no desire to do any multi-Doctor stories like 1983's 'The Five Doctors'. view online here
  • The Independent - the Media section features an interview with Russell T Davies. The article is headed "The saviour of Saturday night drama". view online here

In addition there were a number of articles and features published over the weekend and we'll try to bring you listings of these as soon as we have time.

We'd also like to mention that the excellent UNIT News website has today posted preview images of the new Radio Times cover (on sale 11 April 2006). The cover, of course devoted to Doctor Who, shows David Tennant, Billie Piper, Elizabeth Sladen (Sarah-Jane Smith) and K9 alongside various 'baddies' from the upcoming season. View the cover and the accompanying article here...

07 April :: 'Tooth & Claw' programme information

BBC Press and Publicity today posted week 17 programme information on their website. This covers 'Tooth and Claw', season two episode two, and is available in downloadable PDF format here.

Make sure you look at the Features document as well as the highlights for Saturday the 22nd because the latter includes an interview with Pauline Collins on her role in 'Tooth and Claw'. She also discusses her previous appearance in Doctor Who, in 1967's 'The Faceless Ones', see the original Radio Times cuttings here.

For more detailed information on programming, including the Doctor Who Confidential and Totally Doctor Who documentary strands, see our Season Two programme guide here. Please be aware that some details on this page do include mild spoilers but nothing that hasn't been released officially by the BBC.

07 April :: Press Update

Just when we thought it was relatively quiet we have another flurry of coverage so here we go at the end of the penultimate week before broadcast:

UK Newspapers - Friday 07 April

  • The Daily Star - seemingly for no particular reason The Star features a picture on page 15, titled "Who's got a comb?", of Billie Piper with her hair in a mess. Another story on Page 33, titled "Dirty Doc a Cosmic Casanova", 'reveals' that the new Doctor will be like Cassanova in space. (Or not as the case might actually be).
  • The Mirror - today's TV column reveals that Camille Coduri will star in a BBC3 drama as a porn baroness. An advert for Toys R Us reveals that its Doctor Who action figures are on 3 for 2 in the run-up to Easter.
  • The Times - The Times 2 section features an interview with Sir Richard Rodney Bennett, who is currently celebrating his 70th birthday with a concert tomorrow at the Barbican. Bennett composed music for several Classic Who stories, notably 'The Ark in Space'.
  • The Glasgow Herald (Scotland) - includes a very interesting and comprehensive article on the new series which concentrates in particular on episode two of the second series, 'Tooth and Claw', which was given it's press preview in Glasgow yesterday for reasons that become apparent when you read the piece. The article, titled "Scots Doctor comes home", includes extensive quotes from David Tennant and Russell T Davies but be aware that it may contain information that could be seen as SPOILERS by some. view online here

UK Listings Magazines - 8-14 April

Further to yesterday's listings magazine details we've spotted another feature that's of interest to us all.

  • TV Times - features a page previewing 'School Reunion', episode three, - notably the return of K9 and Sarah Jane-Smith.

UK Magazines

  • Red - has an interview with David Tennant in the latest edition.
  • Fortean Times - has a new series Cyberman on the cover and a lengthy article inside looking at the history of the monsters.
  • GQ (UK edition) - Billie Piper is interviewed by Piers Morgan in the new issue of GQ, the interview is illustrated by a new photo of Piper taken by well known photographer David Bailey. There's not much in the interview about Doctor Who (one mention), most of the interview is taken up with decidedly 'adult' subjects and being a family friendly side we hesitate to go into further detail. Suffice to say that teenage boys should certainly avoid because it'll only frustrate them... badly.... The article is 'naughty', frank and very funny and well worth a read if you want to find out more about what makes Bille tick.

And, of course, the new children's comic Doctor Who Adventures appeared on Wednesday. The popular magazine has quickly dematerialised from shelves all over the country so grab a copy if you see one because you might not have a second chance (unless you own a TARDIS that is!).

06 April :: Press Update

We've experienced a relative lull in coverage over the last few days with the newspapers coming up with the odd snippet and most of the listings magazines waiting to make a big splash next week when their issues covering the 15th to the 21st appear.

Honourable exceptions come in the shape of the Radio Times, which being the BBC's own listings magazine has exclusives on the series, and TV Quick, which included a 'light and fluffy' photo feature this week. All of this weeks UK listings magazines do include mentions of Doctor Who and photos in their 'next week' previews so expect a deluge this coming Tuesday.

UK Newspapers - Thursday 06 April

  • The Mirror - page 3 is devoted to a photoshoot that appears in this month's InStyle magazine. "Frilly Billie's" picture captions are: "pouting Billie Piper poses in a sexy basque" and "Billie with circus steed" - we leave the rest to your imagination!

UK Newspapers - Wednesday 05 April

  • The Guardian - featured a round-up of Doctor Who on-line stores in its shopping page in the G2 section. Merchandise includes a talking Dalek tie, a Doctor Who duvet cover and a life-size TARDIS. (Anyone wishing to buy one for this website's staff would be more than welcome, just e-mail us for our postal address.)

UK Listings Magazines - 8-14 April

  • The Radio Times - this week's edition includes the second a one-page preview for 'New Earth'. It features pictures of the Face of Boe and the Cat nuns and also reveals that Billie Piper has been promised an episode where she can show off her talent for playing comedy. The next week section promises a Doctor Who special (the ultimate guide) and the listings section highlight's Sunday's BBC3 night, while the showing of Doctor Who and the Daleks, the Cushing film, is showcased with the film's poster. Totally Doctor Who, the CBBC show, is previewed in the children's TV section.
  • TV Quick - includes a photo heavy Doctor Who mini feature.

03 April :: Press Update

There's another flurry in the press today covering a number of angles on the series:

UK Newspapers - Monday 03 April

  • The Mirror - reports on the casting of Jonas Armstrong as Robin Hood, mentioning that the new BBC1 show will replace Doctor Who in the schedules
  • The Sun - a picture story, "Stitch Doctor", reveals that Bob Johnson, from Newport Pagnell, hopes to run the London Marathon dresses as a Dalek. 'If I see any Cybermen, they've had it,' he tells the paper.
  • The Guardian - the media section features Steve Hewlett's thoughts on last week's Guardian podcast where Russell T Davies noted that the show's failure to secure more Bafta nominations was 'snobbery' by the awards juries. Hewlett reveals that he chaired the Bafta jury and that "I can't imagine BBC drama ever having had a stronger slate [of drama shows to nominate]". On the following page the Media Tarts cartoon's punchline is 'K9's returning in the new Doctor Who series'. view online here
  • The Times - also reports on Jonas' casting, 'after breathing new life into Doctor Who, the BBC has selected Robin Hood as the next "iconic family brand"' the paper reports
  • The Metro - the free commuter's newspaper includes a picture story, titled "Tardis fails to thrill new Tennant", which quotes from an interview to be published in the new issue of SFX. The paper also reveals that a poll for the new comic Doctor Who Adventures has found that "Winston Churchill is the person people would most like to meet if they could travel back in time".

The weekend also saw some coverage in the UK press:

UK Newspapers - Sunday 02 April

  • The News of The World - included a "sexclusive" interview with Billie Piper and that's all we're saying about that one - c'mon, this is a family website so we'll have none of that here...
  • The Sunday Telegraph - reported in detail on a set visit by TV critic Matthew Norman's son. view online here
  • The Sunday Times - the Culture section highlighted Series One repeats next Saturday on UKTVGold and its Doors section offered a multimedia telly, complete with Christmas Invasion publicity still.

UK Newspapers - Saturday 01 April

  • The Mirror - followed up on GMTV's Fiona Phillips question about when the new Doctor Who series started with a letter revealing the date which is, of course, April the 15th.
  • The Guardian - the Saturday magazine had a photoshoot with David Tennant, modelling clothes for Hadley Freeman. view online here (sadly withough accompanying photos though - sorry about that girls... and boys)

31 March :: 'New Earth' programme information

BBC Press and Publicity today posted week 16 programme information on their website. This covers 'New Earth', season two episode one, and is available in downloadable PDF format.

Titled "The 10th Time Lord touches down", the preamble goes on to say:

"The wait is over! David Tennant, the 10th Time Lord, and Billie Piper as his feisty young companion Rose Tyler, return in the eagerly anticipated second series of the award-winning new Doctor Who."

It then gives a brief synopsis for 'New Earth' which includes one character SPOILER - so please be careful if you're studiously avoiding spoilers. If you aren't read more here

Interesting to note that 'New Earth' is listed as "unplaced" although as far as we are aware broadcast has been confirmed for Saturday the 15th.

For more detailed information on the first weeks programming, including the Doctor Who Confidential and Totally Doctor Who documentary strands, see our newly added Season Two programme guide here. Please be aware that some details on this page do include mild spoilers but nothing that hasn't been released officially by the BBC.

31 March :: Press Update

Following yesterday's deluge we've only spotted two pieces today; one in The Star and one in The Guardian but it's worth noting there's an interesting article about the BAFTAs on the excellent Media Guardian website that's not included in the print edition of the newspaper, details below:

UK Newspapers - Friday 31 March

  • The Guardian - the main section of the newspaper includes an advert for its Saturday supplement Rise. Featuring an empty pint glass, it lists different professions, civil servant, brand manager etc with the final one being 'Time Lord'. Whether the advert is suggesting that the Doctor would beat the Prime Minister in a drink contest we're not sure!

    The G2 section has a small comedy item 'The case against a female Doctor Who" by Lucy Mangan, illustrated with a Tardis picture. Advice includes 'Cannot afford necessary pre-launch campaign explaining to Whovians what a woman is'. Ouch!
  • The Star - the page three lead is the 'exclusive' news that Russell T Davies is considering casting a female Doctor, suggesting Charlotte Church, among others, as a possible Time Lady. Forgive us for being a little unkind, but perhaps they think their readers don't read The Times? (see below)

Online articles and stories - Friday 31 March

  • » MediaGuardian: "Snobbery blamed for Doctor Who's lack of awards success". A piece quoting Russell T Davies and Jane Tranter suggesting that the under-representation of Doctor Who in the BAFTA awards is more down to snobbery than to lack of merit. Particularly given that Who has swept just about every other award ceremony, particularly those open to public vote. view online here (requires free registration).

30 March :: Press Update

Today's newspapers report in full from Tuesday's press launch in Cardiff, and most contain spoilers related to the first episode, New Earth.

UK Newspapers - Thursday 30 March

  • The Mirror - the front page has a picture of Billie Piper (from last year's Arena photo shoot) with the headline "What I'll do after Doctor Who". The story on page 3 reveals that "she has confirmed she is quitting Dr Who" (strange one that since she's said quite the opposite as far as we are aware!).
  • The Star - again trumpeted on the front page with "Dr Who gets thrillie with Billie" (seemingly exhausting the thrillie with Billie pun). The two-page special inside is headed "Exterminate to fornicate" and the piece again contains major spoilers (although some have been rumoured for months on on-line forums). Other stories on the spread include "Bosses to bank on Billie", which reveals that Piper is still in talks about starring in series 3 and "Russ spills thrills" is an episode-by-episode guide to series 2. A final story revals that Rusell T Davies, "love[s] reading about all our great exclusives".
  • The Sun - today features an interview with Billie Piper, with a front page mention, "Look Who's back for 3rd series". The interview in the centre pages reveals that the star "was speaking after signing up for a third series of the hit BBC show". The rest of the interview talks in depth about a major plot point for New Earth, do not read it if you want a big surprise spoilt.
  • The Daily Mail - relegates the story to page 39, which is headed "Billie enjoys time and space with Dr Smooch", and reports that Piper has agreed to stay on for series 3. The article ends with a mention for the Mail's website, www.dailymail.co.uk, where more pictures are available.
  • The Guardian - page 7 features a large effects screen shot from New Earth, headed "Doctor Who returns featuring K9 and Kay" and goes on to say that "The BBC has pledged to send the kids scurrying back behind the sofa during the new series of Doctor Who, despite being inundated with calls last year from parents worried their children were being traumatised." The paper also reports that both Billie Piper and David Tennant have signed up for the third series.
  • The Independent - their page 7 story is headed "Doctor Who takes on flesh-eating bugs and the Almighty"; "For the first time the Doctor falls in love and ponders God's existence" the paper reports.
  • The Daily Express - has it's piece on page 30 under the title "Billie: Why didn't I get a Bafta?" and reports that Piper is aparently 'miffed' that she has not been nominated for a Bafta and that the new second series is even more frightening than the first.
  • The Daily Telegraph - runs a picture story "Look Who's kissing Billie Piper", and starts "David Tennant has agreed to play Dr Who in a third series." Later on confirming "His sidekick Billie Piper will also return".
  • The Daily Record (Scotland) - has a twopage interview with David Tennant, "I'll play for time with Doctor Who" and reveals that "Scots actor David Tennant claims he still wants to be Doctor Who when he's a pensioner". The interview also reveals that the show will be up against Ant and Dec's revival of the quiz show Bullseye.
  • The Metro - the commuter's newspaper features a picture story "Long-term Tennant of the Tardis" which reveals that David Tennant is staying on for series 3 and that Billie Piper "will be involved in the new shows".

This leaves The Mirror in a field of one for reporting that Billie Piper is quitting!

Finally, a special mention has to go for the sheer off-wallness of the Times for its page five story:

  • The Times - asks the question that no one else is: "Is the next driver of the Tardis set to be a woman?" Which has to be the first revival this year for the age-old rumours originallyy started by the show's last BBC producer John Nathan-Turner when Tom Baker quit. "A future Doctor Who could venture into realms where no Doctor has gone before" says the paper, and suggests that Sigouney Weaver, Keeley Hawes and Amanda Burton (dressed up as Tom Baker, Jon Pertwee and Patrick Troughton in the article) are top of Russell T Davies' hit-list. The article interviews Martin Hoscik from the superb UK fan site Unitnews.co.uk. "I'd be interested to see what they could do with a female Doctor," he says.

29 March :: Press Update

Last night saw the official launch of the second series, but perhaps gossip from the doo came in too late for most of todays papers:

UK Newspapers - Wednesday 29 March

  • The Sun - includes a picture story covering David Tennant and Billie Piper's arrival at last night's premiere of the new series. The "It's Doctor Who and the Bra-dis" headline relates to Billie" wearing a saucy see-through top".

There's a bit more that we missed earlier - updated Wednesday PM:

  • The Star - includes a picture of David Tennant and Billy Piper at last nights season two launch.

UK Regional - Wednesday 29 March

  • The Western Mail - includes a picture on page 5 of Tennant and Piper at the launch. There are no further details due to an embargo on coverage which apparently lasts until Wednesday. However the accompanying caption promises a sneak preview of the first episode and interviews with Tennant, Piper and Russell T Davies in Thursday's edition. The page also mentions that that Doctor Who dominates the BAFTA Cymru nominations.
  • The Glasgow Evening Times - includes a new shot from the opening episode, New Earth with the title of "Amazing new world of Dr Who'. View the article online here

28 March :: Here we go! (Press Update)

And here we really do go - all the signs are that the second series is imminent - today's papers see some more mentions of the series and most tellingly of all the Radio Times is cranking up it's coverage in the edition that's out today, as you'll see below:

UK Newspapers - Tuesday 27 March

  • The Star - devotes page five to the news that Doctor Who has been nominated for a Bafta for the first time in its history, and overleaf on page 6 is a survey of what telly can be watched from your mobile phone. Doctor Who, of course, gets a look in.
  • The Sun - reveals that the first story, New Earth, is set on an alien planet. This, we assume, is taken from the Radio Times piece mentioned below.

UK Listings Magazines - 1-7 April

  • The Radio Times - launches its Doctor Who watch feature in the edition of April 1-7, with an interview with the producer Phil Collinson.

Here's some more in what has turned out to be a quiet week for Who news.

UK Newspapers - Friday 13 January

  • The Daily Star - devotes page three to 'Doctor Moo', revealing that Billie Piper once received some cows as a Christmas present.

UK Newspapers - Thursday 12 January

  • The Sun (Scotland) - included an interview with John Barrowman (Captain Jack) which covered his upcoming appearance in the ITV ice dancing programme. We didn't spot anything in the weekend's press but here are a couple of items from today:

UK Newspapers - Monday 09 January

  • The Mirror - reports on the casting of Mona Hammond and Raji James in the end of series episodes 'Army of Ghosts' and 'Doomsday'. Both are veteran EastEnders actors and, despite billing the story as an exclusive, the news first appeared in last Thursday's Doctor Who Magazine.
  • The Guardian - the Media supplement includes an article on the Christmas ratings, noting that the overall number of people watching television on Christmas Day went into sharp decline. The article mentions Doctor Who, and is illustrated with a standard BBC publicity still. Later on, the supplement highlights the show as the seventh most-watched programme of the year - a place lower than in The Star's chart last week. view online here
