1996

This year saw, of course, the brief return of Doctor Who in the form of the Paul McGann TV Movie in May. The listings and articles relating to this can be seen on the Paul McGann Page of this site.

Other than this there was still plenty of Doctor Who related coverage in the Radio Times. From May the magazine carried a special  Sci-Fi section which often mentioned Doctor Who, in fact this section also included an 8th Doctor Comic strip, which can be seen below and on the Cartoons and Comics Page.

This page also presents all the other coverage of the programme from 1996.

The Radio Times Eighth Doctor Comic Strip:

This strip started it's run in the Radio Times the week after the BBC1 airing of the McGann TVM. The first part was in the issue dated 1 - 7 June 1996, the last part was in the issue dated 22 - 2 March 1997, a total run of 42 issues.

There were 5 stories; "Dreadnought" (10 episodes), "Descendance" (10 episodes), "Ascendance" (10 episodes), "Perceptions" (10 episodes) and "Coda" (2 episodes).

All of the stories were scripted by Gary Russell with Art by Lee Sullivan, Colour by Alan Craddock and Lettering by Alitta Fell.

Grateful thanks are due to Gary Russell for his kind permission to display this comic strip here.

The run of stories was, sadly, curtailed due to a change of management at Radio Times. The new management slowly downgraded the Sci-Fi Page until it was eventually dropped later that year!

Originally the strip was planned to last for 60-parts, the fifth story was to be called "Deceptions" but in the event the two part "Coda" was substituted and ended it's 42 week run.

The Radio Times Sci-Fi Page:

Most of the Articles below are from the Radio Times Sci-Fi page. This was a feature of the magazine from immediately after the McGann Television Movie, the week of the 1st to the 7th of June 1996, until the radio Times dated 22-28 March 1997.

You will find some other articles and listings interspersed between the Sci-Fi Page articles, all of the details below are presented in chronological order.

You can also view the full Radio Times Sci-Fi page that contains Part 1 of "Dreadnought". This page is presented here in it's entirety due to the main article on the page, which details fan reaction to the TVM and introduces the comic strip. [view]
