William Hartnell and Carole-Anne Ford

Above: William Hartnell, the First Doctor, pictured with Carole-Anne Ford who played his Grand-daughter, Susan.

William Hartnell played the Doctor for 3 years, from November 1963 to October 1966.

During his time in the role the series won great popularity. Of particular note was the success of the Daleks, perhaps the definitive Doctor Who monster.

Also of note during this period were a number of 'historical' stories, these were later phased out, which had their roots in the original programme concept that it educate as well as entertain. It is, however, interesting to note that this original concept precluded the inclusion of "bug eyed monsters" in Doctor Who - Daleks!?!

Hartnell's last story, The Tenth Planet, introduced another famous Who monster - The Cybermen!

Sadly many episodes from the Hartnell era are now 'missing' from the BBC Archives and only survive in audio and off-air photographic form. More details of these 'missing' stories can be found on our Missing Episodes pages.

Hartnell relinquished the role to Patrick Troughton in 1966 due to ill health.

You will find a chronological, Season by Season, listing of each Hartnell story on the pages in this section. Use the links above-left to view each page. If a listing is hyper-linked click on the text to view the relevant Radio Times cuttings.
