A big change in look here - really prompted by the graphics heavy layout of the previous version of the main page, much of the rest of the site remained unchanged at this point.
I've never been overly sure about this design - I love the image map and the look and feel is okay but the layout has limitations. Having said that it was the one that essentially remained for the followuing three years and, as a result, became the longest lived design of them all! This, however, was the result of my having far less time to work on the site and therefore it's not being updated properly at this time.
Over the ensuing years I spent a great deal of time cleaning up and re-building the underlying code of the site, this was necessitated by the way the site was built in the first place and the mess that was made of the code by the software I initially used.
I also have to admit that the magnitude of the task was quite daunting and this was one of the reasons why it took so long for me to finish.
A big change but lots of garbage code and horrible tables still around - the problem by this point was that I realised quite how awul a mess the code was in and updating over 1000 (see below!) pages of HTML was not a task for the faint hearted!
Over the three year period between the end of 2000 and the end of 2003 a massive cleanup of the code was undertaken. This also included updating the look of a lot of pages that had not been updated in the by the end of 2000. I also made increasing use of CSS but was still at the learning stage with this so not able to implement it 'properly'.
